Last night while examining my cell phone plan, it dawned on me that I had been using my current phone for almost exactly one year. Thinking about this, I plugged my phone into my computer and imported the over 1400 images taken from my phone into Lightroom, and took a visual tour through the last 365 days of my life.
While I was doing this, I began to think about the phenomenon that is cell phone photography, and the cultural impact its had over the last few years. Initially, people used mobile uploads to share (largely unedited) snippets of their life, the moment that they happened. But as cameraphone technology and app/filter technology continued to progress, and the use of both spread further and further, “iPhoneography” – deliberately using cell phone cameras with filters/editing programs to create a stylized and creative image- made the transition from a fringe practice to a legitimate way that we talked to the world and expressed ourselves creatively.
I realized something while examining the images from my phone – They were the details. The moments and scenes in my life that happened spontaneously, not when I had been prepared to shoot with my normal “big” camera. These were the tiny things. A laugh with a friend. A good meal. A pretty scene I had forgotten about. And it felt good to remember them.
Chase Jarvis said, “The best camera is the one that’s with you”, and as I looked through the vignettes of my life, captured by my Android camera, I couldn’t agree with him more. So here it is – a year, through the camera phone.
